Environmental Drawings pt 1

A New Brief

A new brief, means new motivation, and this brief included something I had been thinking of doing for a while "going outside and drawing environments". This honestly really excited me, the only down side to this brief is the incredibly cold Weather, but that is only half a problem because half of our drawings are supposed to be an inside place. My immediate thoughts, were drawing on the train for my internal 5 drawings, and for my external, perhaps the museum gardens in York, as I felt like as I am the only one in the class who lives in York as opposed to Leeds, it would separate my work to the work of others in the class. However, to throw a spanner in the works, I realised that due to my work load in Animation skills, and also the fact that I am rarely ever in York or even at home due to being at College so frequently, that I would be better off just drawing in Leeds and on the train (whenever I can actually get a seat, which is rare!).

Dark Arches

It was surprising to me to find out about this strange place in Leeds, I had never heard of it before, and it sits directly under the train station, where I am every single day of the week on my commute, and it was quite cool to see for the first time, as it reminded me of somewhere straight out of a dark comic book, which fits in with my style of drawing very well. For my first trip there I had only brought pencil, so I only produced 1 drawing, which turned out well, but I would have liked to do more. I think this drawing turned out well, I like my use of shape and quick lines here. Because I was drawing outside, in the cold, my lines are considerably thicker than I think they usually would be, maybe because I was rushing to get it down due to sheer cold. I seem to have accidentally put a fish eye curve in to the drawing as well, which I actually quite like the aesthetic of.

The Train

The train is pretty self explanatory, for here, I wanted to try some drawings in just pen, as it would be a hassle to sharpen pencils and such in the middle of drawings, as I think that would have quite a nice look to it, and might make the drawing a bit quicker too, as I can only draw in 20 minute periods on the train, and finding a train to draw on is tricky due to the time of day I travel at, none the less, I was able to produce a couple of drawings from this particular journey, however I will definitely attempt to do more if I can, even if they are thumbnail sketches.

When I scan these in, I actually really like the look that the pen gives the lighting on these drawings, so I will definitely continue using pen for my train sketches.
